AT&T has announced two new 3G LaptopConnect devices: the AT&T USBConnect Turbo from LG and AT&T USBConnect Velocity from Option. Both will be available in AT&T retail stores, business channels and online beginning March 7. Qualcomm has announced that the company is expanding its focus to target new markets with its Gobi connectivity technology. Building on the success of Gobi technology in PC markets, the Company is collaborating with a wide range of companies to serve the needs of market segments such as e-readers, gaming devices and M2M commercial applications, in addition to continuing to enable connected computing beyond Wi-Fi hotspots with embedded modules and USB modems. Qualcomm and AUDI AG have announced that Audi’s Mobile Media Interface (MMI) Plus in-car navigation system, featuring integrated UMTS connectivity from Qualcomm, will be available on select Audi A8 vehicles this year. The solution brings 3G high-speed data connectivity to the automobile and enables previously unseen navigation capabilities. The MMI’s embedded 3G connectivity also allows the car to perform as a mobile “hot spot”, allowing passengers to connect their Wi-Fi devices to the Internet from the vehicle. Optus has signed an agreement to acquire additional spectrum licences for 10 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 2100MHz band from Qualcomm. The deal is subject to approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB). Optus said that the deal will double its 3G (2100MHz) paired spectrum in the eight capital cities from 10MHz to 20MHz.
Following on the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 spotted on video, a new blurry image shows us that there will be a version of the Pearl 9100 with 3G bands 1,4,8 (aka AWS 3G version) which should be compatible with T-Mobile USA and WIND Canada.

The UMTS Forum (www.umts-forum.org) confirms that subscriptions to 3G/UMTS networks have reached 500 million. The milestone comes just over eight years after the world’s first commercial 3G/WCDMA network was launched by Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO.
