Verizon Wireless has announced that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network field trials in the United States have demonstrated wireless data speeds that are significantly faster than today’s 3G network speeds. Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. Motorola Backflip is now available for purchase via AT&T. The Backflip costs $99.99 after a mail-in rebate and with a 2-year agreement.
As you may already know, Motorola Backflip comes with a 5MP camera, HSDPA, WiFi, GPS with compass, and a full QWERTY keyboard.
AT&T has announced two new 3G LaptopConnect devices: the AT&T USBConnect Turbo from LG and AT&T USBConnect Velocity from Option. Both will be available in AT&T retail stores, business channels and online beginning March 7. AT&T has announced a transition to smaller and more eco-friendly packaging for the wireless device accessories it sells. In addition, AT&T unveiled requirements for manufacturers of mobile phones to reduce the environmental impact of future handsets.
AT&T estimates that the packaging improvements for device chargers, cases, batteries and data cables will help to avoid more than 200 tons of wasted plastic and paper in 2010. According to earth911.com, recycling one ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space, and recycling one ton of paper saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. So the environmental equivalents of the packaging changes equate to avoiding more than 1,100 cubic yards of landfill space – enough to house nearly 10 school buses – by the end of 2010. The housing is constructed from a minimum of 50% recycled plastic and it uses a low power consumption charger, making it a Greenheart phone. It also comes with a music player, FM radio, 2MP camera with video capture, Bluetooth stereo and Media Go software for transferring media files.

Following previous report that Sprint 4G WiMAX phone to be available this summer, Sprint has announced the next markets in the national Sprint 4G roll out. Currently, Sprint’s 4G service is available in 27 cities around the country, including Atlanta, Honolulu, Chicago, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Portland, Philadelphia, and Seattle.
Sprint will launch service in multiple markets this year including Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.
