According to the market research firm In-Stat, The total number of mobile VoIP users will reach 288 million by the end of 2013. Of these, well over half will be associated with online mobile VoIP providers, under one-third will utilize mobile VoIP with 3G MVNOs or mobile operators, and 11% with WiMAX/LTE operators. On a geographic basis, mobile VoIP will be heavily biased towards the Asia Pacific region, particularly among the online mobile VoIP services. The GSMA, which represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry, and the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, a charity that supports women entrepreneurs have published ‘Women and Mobile: A Global Opportunity’. The report, the first detailed global study of its kind, attempts to understand the nature of women mobile subscribers in low and middle-income countries such as Kenya and India, and highlights the barriers facing women’s adoption of mobile technologies. It also shows that, by extending the benefits of mobile phone ownership to more women, a host of social and economic goals can be advanced. A new patent application from Apple reveals improved camera lens, front-facing camera. The application entitled “Apparatus and Method for Compensating for Variations in Digital Cameras,” notes that the current manufacturing process for digital video cameras is inconsistent which often result in flaws. The problem is that camera modules are manufactured separately as independent units before they are incorporated into a larger device, such as an iPhone or iPod. Nokia Siemens Networks predicts that by 2015, annual mobile data traffic will reach 23 Exabytes (24,696,061,952 gigabytes) – equivalent to 6.3 billion people each downloading a digital book every day. Pure capacity is just one issue, however, as the unique properties of mobility, such as intermittent connectivity and shifting location, coupled with the increasing range of smart devices, require mobile broadband networks to be far more intelligent in their handling of traffic growth. The GSMA has announced that mobile operators around the world will invest up to $72 billion in Mobile Broadband technologies in 2010. The new operator CAPEX investment data, compiled by global investment firm Deutsche Bank, reflects the continued consumer and enterprise demand for Mobile Broadband services and the need for underlying infrastructure, and comes as global HSPA connections reach the 200 million milestone. Qualcomm has announced it will establish a research and development center in Korea and will invest in PULSUS Technologies, a leading developer of digital pulse modulation amplifier (DPMA) technology chips that transform audio signals and allow them to be digitally amplified. In cooperation with Korean industry, academic and governmental institutions, Qualcomm’s planned R&D center will expand research collaborations with Korean organizations and focus on advances in next generation mobile communication technology. The USPTO has published a new patent application from Apple. The patent application entitled “Power Management Circuitry and Solar Cells”, describes a power management system that would allow the iPod and iPhone to operate primarily on solar power.
Apple has revealed an interest in solar technology in the past. Back in 2008, Apple filed for a patent that would put a solar panel behind the LCD display of the iPhone.
