According to the WSJ, Sony is preparing to develop “a smartphone capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games“.

Sony Ericsson Naite is now available with a price tag of $159.99 unlocked in the US via any local Sony Style store or on the company’s website. The housing is constructed from a minimum of 50% recycled plastic and it uses a low power consumption charger, making it a Greenheart phone. It also comes with a music player, FM radio, 2MP camera with video capture, Bluetooth stereo and Media Go software for transferring media files.

Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer said at the Mobile World Congress that the PlayStation Network is heading to Sony Ericsson phones. Previously, also at MWC, Microsoft showed off Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7.
Here’s what Sir Howard said:
“PSN is no secret weapon. Leveraging PSN we are building a new network service that will connect many more network enabled product including Sony Bravias, Viaos and Blu-ray players. To satisfy the demand for more open systems and to broaden the array of network devices connected to our network services we are committed to extending that service to Sony Ericsson mobile phones.
As part of these initiatives we are also exploring consistent user interfaces across Sony Ericsson products to ensure a seamless and integrated experience for the consumer.”
Fido has a new candybar phone in its portfolio, it’s Sony Ericsson Naite.
The mobile phone comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera with 2.5 digital zoom and video, 2.2-inch QVGA display, FM radio and media player, Bluetooth 2.0, speakerphone, 8GB microSD card.
Sony Ericsson Naite is available for $25 on a 2-year contract or $150 sans contract via Fido.

Discretix’ Multi-Scheme DRM Client has been deployed on select Sony Ericsson mobile phones based on the Windows Mobile and Android operating systems.
