AT&T expands Wi-Fi hotspot coverage to nearly 20,000 domestic hotspots. Following the previous Free WiFi HotSpots for iPhone from AT&T, AT&T announced that it has agreed, through one of its subsidiaries, to acquire privately-held Wayport, Inc., a leading provider of managed Wi-Fi services in the United States, for approximately $275 million in cash. The deal adds Wayport’s focused capabilities and enterprise customer portfolio with AT&T’s leading Internet Protocol (IP) and 3G networks, and broad consumer and business customer bases, to deliver enhanced broadband connectivity at home, in the office, on the road, and virtually anywhere in between. The acquisition expands the AT&T Wi-FiSM footprint to nearly 20,000 domestic hotspots, takes the company’s global Wi-Fi presence to more than 80,000 locations*, and creates thousands of new ways for customers worldwide to stay in touch. VimpelCom 3G network in Russia. The commercial launch of a 3G network has been announced by VimpelCom in several Russian regions, in four cities: Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Chelyabinsk. Along with the 3G network launch, the mobile operator has introduced seven tariff plans which make broadband Internet access available to a wide range of users. 3G Internet will open new opportunities for high-speed data transfer and other 3G services for all VimpelCom customers. VimpelCom plans to launch 3G networks in around 40 cities by the end of 2008.

BBC Trust for 3G TV and radio. The BBC Trust is consulting on plans to syndicate all its national TV and radio services over 3G networks for mobile devices. Executives have proposed to make the arrangement permanent following a 12-month trial which ended in April. Mobile network operators Vodafone, Orange, 3UK and T-mobile and, via other MNOs, Sky, would distribute the channels as part of their subscription TV services.

MTS + Microsoft + Fujitsu Siemens for 3G-enabled notebook. Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (”MTS”), Microsoft, and Fujitsu Siemens announced the launch of the first integrated 3G notebook solution in the CIS. The companies collaborated to deliver a 3G-enabled Fujitsu Siemens notebook running on the Microsoft Vista operating system with an embedded SIM card and a special data tariff plan from MTS. Samsung SGH-i780 as ‘Samsung i788′ for AT&T? A new rumor reported that some handset manufacturer representatives at a recent AT&T store managers’ meeting started showing off their latest wares. One of which appeared to be the Samsung i780. Technically, it would have been the Samsung SGH-i788, which has the bands necessary for the US 3G networks. Samsung i788 is just a little thicker than the BlackJack II, features WiFi, GPS, and 3G. The rep mentioned that the Samsung i788 was not yet released instead of “Over the air.“
