LiMo Foundation + Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum for Open SourceLiMo Foundation + Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum for Open Source. Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum members and LiMo combine together to support and to unify the growing momentum of Linux platforms in the global mobile market. The move will encompass LiPS Forum members from across the mobile ecosystem, in-cluding chipset suppliers, Linux OS and mobile stack vendors, handset designers and OEMs and regional and global wireless operators. It follows announcements by other LiPS members who have joined LiMo Foundation: ACCESS, ARM Limited, Azingo, France Telecom / Orange, Huawei Technology, MontaVista Software, Inc., NXP Semi-conductors, Open-Plug, Purple Labs and Texas Instruments. Orange, ACCESS - LiMo Foundation New MembersOrange, ACCESS - LiMo Foundation New Members. LiMo announced two new members at the Mobile World Congress - France Telecom owned Orange and the Palm OS owner - ACCESS. What that means for the platform is hard to say — it’s certainly a good thing — especially the inclusion of ACCESS’ ALP platform — but we still wait to see something powerful released wearing the LiMo badge.

“The reputations of Orange and ACCESS for leadership within the Mobile Linux community are widely recognized, so these companies represent major additions to LiMo Foundation’s governing board,” said Morgan Gillis, executive director, LiMo Foundation. Huawei, TrollTech joins LiMo Foundation - Mobile Linux Group against Android

Huawei, TrollTech joins LiMo Foundation - Mobile Linux Group against AndroidHuawei, TrollTech joins LiMo Foundation - Mobile Linux Group against Android. LiMo Foundation is a group formed by Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone with an idea to deliver an open and globally consistent software platform based upon mobile Linux. LiMo’s new members are including Trolltech, Acrodea, ETRI, Huawei, and Purple Labs. The group, including founders NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone, and Motorola, now consists of 25 members.

Among five new additions to the LiMo Foundation are Chinese manufacturer Huawei and Trolltech, the Linux developers who last year launched the open-source Green Phone, bringing the total to 23 companies. In addition South Korea’s ETRI, a national R+D lab have joined the efforts. Although these new companies are relatively small, the LiMo Foundation was founded by major companies and carriers including NTT DoCoMo, which is also a part of Google’s Open Handset Alliance Linux efforts. Despite DoCoMo’s key membership in both, it is not clear whether LiMo’s efforts will work in concert with or be positioned against the OHA.
