Italian Mobile Operator Wind Embeds DVD Disc in SIM Card Holder. Italian mobile operator, Wind has started offering SIM cards, with an embedded DVD compliant optical disc in the plastic holder which can be used to store PC software or media content. The cards are supplied by Gemalto, and will be used by Wind to deliver software to allow wireless Internet access from a PC. VimpelCom 3G network in Russia. The commercial launch of a 3G network has been announced by VimpelCom in several Russian regions, in four cities: Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Chelyabinsk. Along with the 3G network launch, the mobile operator has introduced seven tariff plans which make broadband Internet access available to a wide range of users. 3G Internet will open new opportunities for high-speed data transfer and other 3G services for all VimpelCom customers. VimpelCom plans to launch 3G networks in around 40 cities by the end of 2008.

China Mobile Q1 Profit Rises 37%. China Mobile, reported first quarter results. Profits reached 24.1 billion yuan (US$3.4 billion), a 37% rise over the year-earlier. after it added customers at a record pace by cutting rates and offering news and instant messaging. China Mobile’s net income jumped from 17.6 billion yuan the previous year to beat average analyst estimates of around 23.6 billion yuan. Sales rose 20% to 93.02 billion yuan. Telstra to stop CDMA for HSDPA Network. Following the approval by the Australian government, Australia’s Telstra will be switching off its CDMA network in favor of the new HSDPA-enabled 3G network. According to The Australian, initially the government resisted giving green light to the mobile operator over concerns that the new network would not be able to provide coverage in more remote areas and other technical issues. After Verizon : Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile offer Unlimited Too. Recently Verizon unveiled its “unlimited offering.” All other major carriers responded with pretty much the same deal. Sprint’s deal costs bit more ($119) but that price buys you both unlimited voice and data.
