NTT DOCOMO, Renesas Technology, Fujitsu Limited, and Sharp Corporation announced that they plan to jointly develop the SH-Mobile G4 single-chip LSI device, and a platform incorporating it, to support the HSUPA/HSDPA/W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE (2G) mobile telephony standards. It’s now for Japan, NTT DoCoMo plans to sell Android phone in Japan next year. DoCoMo president Ryuji Yamada made the comment at a press briefing in Tokyo yesterday. He also said the company aims to offer “close to 10” so-called smart phones next year.

NTT DoCoMo exhibited its intelligent Li-ION battery for mobile phones during the Wireless Japan 2008 conference held this July 22 to 24. The intelligent Li-ION battery has been developed by NTT DoCoMo together with Mitsumi Electric Co Ltd that can detect troubles within the Li-ION battery and relay it to the user. The 8-bit microcomputer embedded onto the pack is responsible for monitoring the battery condition. Based on the battery’s current, voltage, temperature and other indicators; its state of deterioration, remaining battery level, and problems with the battery unit could be projected on screen. Interestingly, the battery’s status is stored on the battery itself, so even if a user change phones, he can still view prior recorded data. The leading Japanese mobile operator says that it will use the new intelligent battery packs on its new phone models to come out next year.

This function activates whenever users touch screen icons to make a call, use e-mail, take and view photos or listen to music.
