Two new USB HSPA-enabled modems - the Compass 888 and Compass 889 have recently been announced by Sierra Wireless. Both come with a microSD memory card slot and TRU-install software installation technology, which simplifies installation process and allows it to be done directly with the USB modem. The only difference between the two is in the operating frequency they use. Sierra Wireless Compass 888 comes with HSPA on 850, 1900, and 2100 MHz frequency bands, the Compass 889 has 850 Mhz in favor of 900 Mhz. It provides up to 7.2Mbps download and 1.9Mbps upload speeds on the carrier’s Next G network. Interestingly, these speeds could be further increased via future firmware upgrades. It’s a convenient, easy-to-use USB device that provides a high speed connection to the AT&T wireless network whenever it’s needed. The device provides plug-and-play installation by including a preloaded version of AT&T Communication Manager software for Microsoft Windows Vista, XP and 2000 notebooks and Sierra’s Watcher software for Mac notebooks (versions 10.4.11 or later) so that new customers can get up and running quickly and easily.
