BenQ E55 for Taiwan. A new BenQ’s 3G phone has been released in Taiwan for low-to-mid range market. BenQ E55 is the successor to the E53 model. The candybar features two cameras, a 2 megapixel for photo, and a VGA camera for video calls. It has a 2-inch 176×220 pixels screen with 262k colors, small external screen (96×64 pixels), media player, FM radio, Bluetooth, microSD memory expansion slot, and a 900 mAh Li-Ion battery. Garmin Nuvifone to be manufactured by ASUS? Following on the possibly Garmin Nuvifone in white version alongside the confirmed Black Nuvifone, A new rumor said that Garmin has announced that it has, for the first time ever, outsourced production of a device. Nuvifone will apparently be manufactured by ASUS. According to DigiTimes, industry sources pointed out ASUS has been working with Garmin for two years on the project, with the Taiwan-based maker chiefly contributing its know-how in RF technologies. Garmin’s director of OEM and mobile marketing, Roger Jollis, confirmed that the first Nuvifone will be the first in line of Nuvifone-branded devices planned for the next few years. Stay tuned.

HTC New Mobile Internet Device (MID). Market sources in Taiwan indicated that HTC is developing new MID (Mobile Internet Device) products, using Intel’s Atom and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset platforms. New devices are likely to be unveiled in the second half of 2008. According to HTC’s President and CEO, Peter Chou, they will continue to focus on “Internet experience through mobile devices” but will also adjust its deployment of UMPC products (HTC Shift). The reason for the change in their UMPC strategy is the rise of small and affordable laptop computers like the Asus eeePC, which people buy more.

Vodafone + China-based Amoi Electronics for Windows Mobile Smartphones. According to sources in Taiwan’s handset industry, China-based Amoi Electronics has landed orders to make Windows Mobile smartphones for Vodafone. The move will make the Chinese company the third supplier of Windows Mobile-based mobile devices for the UK-based telecom giant, which at the moment purchases such devices from HTC and Asustek. 2nd OpenMoko Phone in March-April 2008. OpenMoko, a Linux-based open source handset platform developer, will be launching its second handset in the March-April period this year, according to company’s president Sean Moss-Pultz. In addition to pushing its own products, the Taiwan-based open source handset maker will also use its platform to engage in production of hardware devices in cooperation with other companies and even plans to make up to one-third of its overall revenues from such deals.
