iPhone 2.0 beta Firmware has Geo-Tagging Support for Camera Photos
iPhone 2.0 beta Firmware has Geo-Tagging Support for Camera Photos. The latest iPhone OS 2.0 firmware which is released privately to a select group of enterprise partners (firmware build 5A292g) adds a few new preferences and the beginnings of geo-tagging support for the handset's Camera app.

The developers say location-aware services such as "Maps" and "Camera" now ask the user's permission before transmitting data used to identify their current geographical location.

The location-aware applications can presumably use the cell-tower triangulation method that is employed by the current iPhone, but the possibility of the next-generation iPhone using a true GPS receiver is tempting indeed. (previous posts: 3G iPhone to sport GPS, Video Conference, Mobile TV? and iPhone 2.0 for True GPS Support?)

The addition as it applies to the Camera application is interesting in that it suggests Apple is actively working on adding support for geo-tagging photographs. That means any picture taken with the iPhone's camera can be tagged with the location in which the photo was snapped. The location of the iPhone would be determined using the cell-tower triangulation method or GPS coordinates, and the location-data would be added to the digital picture's meta-data.

Essentially, geo-tagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to media files such as latitude and longitude coordinates -- or even names of places -- so that those files can later be referenced, searched, and grouped based on their origin.

In addition, The new firmware also shows off a new general preference allowing the user to enable or disable location-aware services on a system-wide basis. The Camera application asks permission to use location data, but does not embed the meta-data into pictures. Stay tuned.
