Windows Mobile to Grow 50% per-Year. According to Reuters, Microsoft expects global units sales of its Windows Mobile software to grow at least 50 percent in the fiscal years 2008 and 2009. The Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Brazilian, Russian and Indian regions are the fastest-growing smartphone markets, but Europe and the US are still getting positive growth. "We're actually still seeing very good growth (for our mobile software) in markets like Europe and the United States," said Eddie Wu, Microsoft's managing director of OEM embedded devices Asia.

Microsoft competes against Symbian-based operating systems which are used by vendors such as Nokia and LG Electronics, It also faces stiff competition from other players such as Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry and Palm.
