How to enable Emoji icons on your non-Japanese iPhone 3G
How to enable Emoji icons on your non-Japanese iPhone 3G. Remember the recent 'iPhone Emoji' icons with the launch of the iPhone 2.2 OS? This is good news in case you want 'emoji for iPhone' outside Japan.

An Irish iPhone developer, Steven Troughton-Smith has figured out a way to enable it on the iPhone using a simple hack. You need to edit the file /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist on the device -> whether you use a jailbreak to achieve this or merely some iTunes backup editor is up to you.
“Emoji is the Japanese name for the picture characters or emoticons used in Japanese wireless messages and web pages. Originally meaning pictograph, the word literally means e “picture” + moji “letter”. The characters are used much like emoticons elsewhere, but a wider range is provided, and the icons are standardized and built into the handsets.”
How to enable Emoji icon support on your non-Japanese iPhone or iPhone 3G?
0. You'll need iPhone 2.2 OS update for your iPhone /iPhone 3G.
- You can update to jailbroken iPhone 2.2 OS using Pwnage Tool (iPhone 2.2 Jailbreak with Pwnage Tool 2.2).
1. SSH into your iPhone and navigate to User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist.
- If it's difficult to find the plist file, instead of it you can try this directory:
/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist
- Edit it using a PLIST Editor and create a new boolean string: KeyboardEmojiEverywhere
- Set the boolean to: True
2. Navigate to iPhone Settings>General>Keyboards>Japanese>Emoji
You will now see an ‘On/Off’ option for Japanese Emoji! just Toggle the switch to “ON”
3. Enjoy Emoji icons on your non-Japanese iPhone!

NOTE:
- Please proceed with caution and remember to take the necessary BACKUPS before proceeding!!
- Last but not least, Not all devices support emoji so your friends might see a strange character on their phones.
