NXP: 40 million NFC phones to ship in 2011

NXP has revised their previous estimate about how many NFC phones to ship this year. According to a new report, no more than 40m NFC phones are now expected to be produced this year — down from a previously forecast 70 million to 100 million units.

Rick Clemmer, CEO of chip maker NXP told Near Field Communications World that:
“We believe the shortfall is due to a combination of formulation and agreement on the specific business models to support the ecosystem as well as business challenges some handset OEMs are experiencing in the marketplace.”
