Twitter acquires Cloudhopper to handle SMS

Twitter was inspired by SMS (see Twitter's 140 character limit). To help it further grow and scale their SMS service, Twitter has announced the acquisition of Cloudhopper, a messaging infrastructure company that enables Twitter to connect directly to mobile carrier networks in countries all over the planet. The acquisition is to help Twitter manage the billions of text messages it handles.

SIRIUS XM Radio coming to Android

SIRIUS XM Radio has announced that a free application for Android-powered smartphones will be available in May, giving consumers access to over 120 channels of sports, talk, entertainment, news, comedy and commercial-free music on the DROID by Motorola and the Google Nexus One. The free SIRIUS XM App for the DROID and Nexus One will give mobile consumers the freedom to listen to SIRIUS XM Premium Online content on the go on their smartphones over cellular and WiFi networks.

Two new unannounced handsets have been spotted in the wild - LG GD550 and Philips Xenium X712. LG GD550 is a slider phone coming with a 5MP camera, quad-band GSM radio, media player, and a microSD memory card slot. Philips Xenium X712 clamshell phone features a 5MP camera, dual SIM capability, media playback software, and a memory expansion slot.

Cricket Navigator navigation app comes with turn-by-turn directions

Cricket has launched its navigation app/service. Cricket Navigator is a downloadable application that turns your handset into a powerful GPS navigation tool with audible turn-by-turn driving directions, local search and maps. The app gives you audible, turn-by-turn directions to any destination, along with detours if traffic’s heavy, and re-routing if you miss a turn. You can perform a local search by business category, address, intersection or airport code and then call found locations with a press of the send key. Cricket Navigator points out landmarks along your route, like restaurants, gas stations (with prices) and more. Color 3D maps with pan and zoom options show you where you are, at any given moment.

MacGruber iPhone app available for download

MacGruber gets its iPhone application. In addition to the game itself, the iPhone app also packs exclusive ringtones, photos, wallpapers, the movie trailer, and more at no additional cost.

Free Palm accessories for webOS users

Palm has announced that "a small group of tote-bag-toting Palm envoys will be on the lookout for folks who look like they could use a free Palm accessory. It could be a case, a colorful induction-charging back for the Palm Pixi, a Palm Touchstone Charging Dock -- or maybe even some cool Palm stickers!"

Palm will be randomly giving out the accessories in any country where Palm phones are sold. The company also said that there are no catches, no obligations, and no strings attached.

Cisco WebEx Meeting Center app for BlackBerry available for download

Cisco has announced a new, free, downloadable Cisco WebEx Meeting Center application for BlackBerry smartphones. Cisco WebEx Meeting Center for BlackBerry smartphones gives business users the flexibility and ease of joining online meetings, and viewing shared documents and desktops directly from their smartphones.

Cisco now makes it easy and intuitive for BlackBerry smartphone users to join and participate in Cisco WebEx online meetings. The Cisco WebEx Meeting Center application now allows meeting participants to use elements such as the menu option to access the features and shortcuts for fast navigation while they are on the go. The application gives meeting hosts the flexibility to start a scheduled meeting that has previously been scheduled on a computer and to pass presenter control on to another attendee participating from a computer.
